“Science and Scientists: A Tribute to Yves Roisin”

“Science is only possible within a community. It does not come to life unless it moves from one mind to another.”

“Good science requires a healthy dose of listening, attentiveness, and generosity…”

“It also requires a kind exchange between peers, both more and less experienced…”

“And the best ideas do not always emerge at the laboratory bench…”

“Yves Roisin passed away this week. He was a Belgian termitologist at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, with more than 330 papers published between 1984 and 2025, covering a wide range of fields including taxonomy, phylogeny, biogeography, molecular evolution, symbiosis, gut microbiome, reproduction, development, community ecology, behavior, and applied termitology.”

“The entire national and international termitological community is saddened by his passing, but there is one consolation: the superpower of scientists — they never truly leave us…”

“The very nature of scientific endeavor ensures that each generation of scientists develops upon the legacy of those who came before. In this way, the work continues to grow, carrying within it the DNA of each scientist’s achievements.”

“Roisinitermes ebogoensis, a genus described in honor of Yves Roisin”

“We are grateful for Yves Roisin’s invaluable contributions to the community through his studies of termites, but above all, we are grateful for the openness, care, and respect with which he always treated the termitological community in Brazil.”
